Breast Enhancement

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Breast Enhancement is a very comprehensive topic involving a vast amount of information. I will create this blog in sections to breakdown this topic into a series of smaller topics that make up the breast enhancement consultation. As general sections Breast Enhancement comprises: 1-Breast Augmentation, 2-Breast Lift, 3-Breast Reduction, 4- Breast Reconstruction. There is overlap of each of the categories in certain specific circumstances, however to make the most effective use of this blog I will separate each category until much later in the discussion of more complicated issues that arise and need combination treatment.

The consultation for Breast Augmentation should provide a significant amount of information to the prospective patient; therefore I will begin with several basic concepts that require patient consideration prior to making a decision regarding the best options for you. Every consultation should discuss 6 basic components of the Breast Augmentation procedure.

1 Type of Implant {saline filled vs silicone gel filled}

2 Style of the Implant {moderate profile vs. high profile implants; smooth surface vs. textured surface implants; round implant shape vs. anatomical (tear-drop) shaped implants}

3 Size of Implant

4 Location of the Implant { above the muscle (subglandular) vs. below the muscle (submuscular, sub-Pectoral, bi-planar }

5 Incision Location { Infra-mammary, Peri-Areolar, Trans-Axillary, Trans-Umbilical }

6 Complications{implant shell failure (rupture, leakage), Capsule formation including capsular contracture, implant exposure, infection}

In the ensuing blogs you will be provided specific information regarding each of the above topics. This information will be very useful during your consultation process. Proper questioning of your surgeons preference with respect to each topic as well as what would provide the optimal result in your individual case will enhance your satisfaction with the results of your procedure. Please remember Breast Enhancement and specifically Breast Augmentation is elective surgery. I like to describe this as “want” surgery not “need” surgery. Therefore, you have time to make an informed decision regarding what can be done and how it will meet your objectives.

Juvederm XC Soft Tissue Filler

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Allergan has introduced the latest advance in the soft tissue filler marketplace with the introduction of Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. Both products are similar to the previously marketed filler products introduced by Allergan however the formula has been enhanced to add local anesthetic directly into the filler. This enhnaces the patient experience by reducing the discomfort associated with the injection procedure.

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid (HA) based dermal filler that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of facial volume loss and resulting skin wrinkles associated with the aging process. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Although the effect is temporary, the resulting volume correction may last up to one year or longer depending upon injection site. The smooth consistency of Juvedrem allows for treatment of a variety of facial volume correction issues.

410 Breast Implant

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The 410 breast implant is a significant advance in breast implant technology. It is a cohesive gel implant meaning there is no liquid silicone contained in the implant. It is also known as “form stable” meaning it maintains is shape when placed into the pocket. It is available in a large variety of shapes and sizes. The individual implant dimensions are based upon your goals with respect to breast reconstruction or implant revision.

The use of the implant is currently restricted to an FDA controlled research protocol that requires regular and routine follow-up.

These implants were originally invented with two purposes in mind: 1) to make a longer- lasting implant, and 2) to make an implant that would maintain a more attractive and predictable shape. This goal is primarily achieved by making the gel more cohesive, so that it is less liquid-like and more solid than other silicone gel implants. For this reason, they have been known as the “gummy bear implants”. Though preliminary data suggests these implants might be meeting its goals, prospective enrollees must understand that these claims have not yet been proven.
