Dermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment in which the outer layers of the skin are gently removed to create a smooth and evenly pigmented appearance. Dermabrasion, also known as dermaplaning, can treat wrinkles, acne scars, and other blemishes by gently blending them into the surrounding areas of skin. This mechanical process uses a high-speed rotary device for the controlled removal of damaged skin cells, sanding down the older layer of skin to reveal younger and healthier skin.
Is Dermabrasion Right for Me?
Dermabrasion is popular with both men and women of all ages. While a popular anti-aging treatment, dermabrasion can also improve the appearance of skin blemishes not related to the aging process. Patients with active acne or cold sores may not be good candidates for dermabrasion.
The most important factors for the success of your treatment are your skin type and the characteristics of your skin blemish. Darker skin is associated with a slightly elevated risk of skin discoloration. Some types of skin damage respond better than others to dermabrasion treatment. If you have freckles you want to keep, you should avoid having dermabrasion treatment in that area of skin, since they could disappear as a result of dermabrasion. If you’re considering this treatment option, view dermabrasion before and after photos to get an idea of the possible results.
Each dermabrasion session takes about an hour, during which time a special high-speed rotary device is used to gently sand away the damaged layer of skin. This procedure is typically performed with local anesthesia, sometimes with a sedative if patients are anxious about possible pain during the procedure. First, the skin is cleansed to provide a clean surface for the dermabrasion tool. Then, a special spray freezes the skin temporarily, further minimizing any discomfort.
The surgeon then uses an abrasive wheel to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal a layer of healthier skin. The rough surface of the device smooths away the outermost skin cells until the surgeon has reached a level at which the scar or wrinkle will be less visible. An ointment will be applied to the skin immediately following dermabrasion.
Recovery After Dermabrasion
After dermabrasion, patients report that their skin feels exceptionally smooth and clean. Many patients can see immediate results. During the recovery period, which can last up to a week, common side effects include the following:
- Redness, with some residual pinkness for up to eight weeks
- Feeling of a sunburn in the treated area
- Formation of a scab or crust
- Itchiness or tightness as skin heals
Patients typically return to work in a week or less. For a month following dermabrasion, patients are advised to avoid alcohol consumption, sun exposure, and applying skincare or makeup products to the treated area, while staying well-hydrated. Many patients find that one dermabrasion session provides the results they are after, although some patients opt to undergo several treatment sessions for more dramatic results.
