Breast Reconstruction (Mastectomy) in Staten Island, NY

Dr. Decorato offers breast reconstruction (mastectomy) to patients throughout New York and New Jersey, including Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Newark, Jersey City, and Perth Amboy.

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to recreate the size and shape of the breast following removal due to cancer (a procedure known as mastectomy), traumatic injury, or congenital defects. This procedure has made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that very closely approximates the look and feel of natural breast tissue. Patients undergoing breast reconstruction have lost one or both breasts and have chosen this procedure to restore a more natural shape, size, and appearance to the breast area.

Is Breast Reconstruction Right for Me?

Breast reconstruction is often performed immediately following the mastectomy procedure so that the patient does not go a significant length of time with no breast at all. Breast reconstruction can also be performed at any point in time following breast removal. The reconstruction of a breast that has been removed for cancer treatment is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures offered by plastic surgeons.

For cancer patients and cancer survivors, breast reconstruction provides the possibility of restoring the breasts to a more natural shape, improving patients’ self-confidence through the restoration of a more feminine silhouette. If you’d like to see the potential results of breast reconstructive surgery, ask Dr. Decorato for breast reconstruction before and after photos.

The Cost of Breast Reconstruction in New York or New Jersey

The price for breast reconstruction ranges due to the complexity of the individual case. Unlike most cosmetic breast enhancement procedures, breast reconstruction costs are typically covered by health insurance.

Procedure Details

Before undergoing breast reconstruction, the surgeon will discuss potential methods for rebuilding the breast. Options include donor muscle, skin, or fat from the back, buttocks, or other areas of the body. This requires a donor site and can result in a longer hospital stay. Another option is to insert saline or silicone breast implants, such as those used for breast enlargement procedures. Typically, when the nipple and areola require reconstructive surgery, skin grafting is used to create a natural feel.

Breast reconstruction is performed with general anesthesia and may take anywhere from two to six hours. This procedure may take more time if it is combined with a mastectomy operation. First, the surgeon creates a flap or incision which allows access to the tissue. Any remaining tissue will be sculpted before the breast is reconstructed using silicone or saline implants or donor tissue. Once the final appearance of the breast has been achieved, the skin is placed over the new breast and closed with sutures.

Recovery After Breast Reconstruction

Depending on the patient’s overall health and the extent of the surgery, breast reconstruction patients may spend anywhere from one to five nights in the hospital. During this initial recovery phase, common symptoms experienced by patients include discomfort and tenderness, swelling, bruising, and numbness in breast tissue. These symptoms will begin to subside by the time you leave the hospital. Most patients return to their normal activities about three to four weeks following the procedure.
