Liposuction is a surgical technique for the removal of excess fat deposits to improve the contours of the body. During liposuction, a small metal tube known as a cannula is inserted between the skin and muscle, in the layer of fat. This cannula gently suctions out excess fatty tissue, removing targeted fat cells to create a more proportionate silhouette.

Is Liposuction Right for Me?

Liposuction can be used to remove stubborn fat deposits in many areas of the body. Diet and exercise are certainly valuable weight loss strategies, but they result in all-over weight loss, not targeted loss of fat deposits. Liposuction is ideal for patients who find it difficult to lose weight from certain problem areas. Popular treatment areas include the abdomen, “love handles,” saddlebags, thighs, arms, and buttocks.

Ideal liposuction patients have the following characteristics:

  • Are at or near their goal weight (not more than 30 pounds overweight). Liposuction should not be viewed as a weight loss procedure or an alternative to diet and exercise.
  • Have fat deposits in just a few areas of the body. Liposuction is not typically used to treat a layer of fat that is evenly distributed throughout the body.
  • Have no serious medical concerns that may make them a poor candidate for plastic surgery.
  • Have firm, elastic skin, which will respond well to improvements in the body contours.

Most liposuction procedures remove five pounds of fat or less to create more proportionate or smoother contours. If you are considering liposuction, view liposuction before and after photos to judge the results possible with this procedure.

The Costs of Liposuction in New York or New Jersey

Costs of liposuction vary greatly depending on the specific method used, the body area being treated, and the volume of fat being removed, among other factors.

Procedure Details

Liposuction is typically performed with local anesthesia. First, small incisions allow the insertion of a hollow tube (cannula) into the layer of fat beneath the skin. Through this tube, a solution of saline and lidocaine (anesthetic) is injected to numb the area and break apart the fat deposit for easier removal. Then a liposuction device creates suction in the tube. The surgeon moves this tube back and forth under the skin, slowly removing excess fat. As the targeted fat cells are removed, the remaining layer of fat is sculpted to provide an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Depending on the body part and volume of fat removed, liposuction can require between one and five hours.

Recovery After Liposuction

Following liposuction, some patients return to work in as little as three days, although other patients take a full week off from work. Treatment of larger body parts tends to require a longer recovery period. During this time, common side effects include soreness, bruising, and swelling, and a compression garment should be worn to reduce side effects and support the tissues as they adjust to their new contours.
