Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty or breast implants, is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts. During a breast implant procedure performed at his Staten Island practice, Dr. Decorato can increase your chest by several bra cup sizes through the insertion of a silicone or saline implant behind your natural breast tissue. Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States today, and thousands of women have chosen to alter the size of their bust line through breast implants.
Are Breast Implants Right for Me?
Women choose to undergo breast augmentation for a number of reasons. Many women feel that their breast size is too small for their body. This is also a common procedure following the loss of breast tissue due to weight loss, pregnancy, aging, trauma, or a mastectomy to treat breast cancer. Augmentation mammoplasty helps patients achieve more proportionate or symmetrical breasts, improving overall self-confidence.
If you are unhappy with the current size or shape of your breasts and are an adult woman in good overall health, you are an ideal candidate for this procedure. Most teens are advised to wait until they reach adulthood since the breast volume may still be growing.

How Much Does a Breast Augmentation Cost in New York or New Jersey?
The total price for your breast augmentation varies depending on the type of implant, among other considerations. Each case is unique, and pricing will be discussed during your consultation at Dr. Decorato’s Staten Island office.
How Involved Is the Breast Implant Procedure?
With breast augmentation, the first step is selecting the right size, shape, and type of implants. You will work with your surgeon to determine the appropriate implants before your surgery is scheduled. Many breast implant patients find it helpful to view breast augmentation before and after photos when considering the various options available to them.
The procedure to insert the implants takes about two hours and requires general anesthesia. First, incisions are created to allow the surgeon access to the breast tissue. These incisions are usually between one and three inches long and may be located in the armpit, the belly button, around the areola, or along the crease under the breasts. The breast implants are subsequently positioned in the chest. Once they have been placed in a natural position, the incisions are closed with sutures.
What is the Ideal Implant® for Breast Augmentation?
While my Plastic Surgical practice offers both saline and silicone breast implants for breast enhancement, I am pleased to add the Ideal Implant® to my patient’s list of options. This alternative offers many cosmetic and health-related benefits over traditional breast implants. First, patients will notice that these implants look and feel just as natural as any other implant option, and in some cases, even more natural. When compared with traditional implants, the Ideal Implant® offers a lower risk of capsular contracture and rupture. In the rare instance of implant rupture, it can be discovered without the need for breast imaging, which may be required with silicone implants. Patients will now be able to enjoy the full benefits of breast augmentation without the potential concern for increasing their risk of health complications or needing to schedule regular breast MRI scans to detect ruptures. Additionally, the Ideal Implant® requires smaller incisions than silicone implants, improving the recovery process and minimizing scarring. Overall, I believe that the Ideal Implants® offers patients an improved option for those who are concerned about the risks associated with silicone implants but still desire the natural look and feel that silicone implants offer. Nevertheless, I encourage you to discuss your goals and desires, so that together we can help you find the best option when it comes to your breast augmentation procedure.
How Long Is Recovery After Breast Augmentation?
Most patients who undergo breast augmentation plan to take one to two weeks off from work and other obligations. Strenuous activities must be avoided for a month to six weeks.
During the initial recovery phase, common side effects experienced by Dr. Decorato’s breast implant patients include bruising around the insertion site, swelling, tenderness or soreness, and discomfort during the initial 2 to 4 days.
Patients recovering from a breast augmentation should wear surgical dressings or a surgical bra, as required by the surgeon, to minimize side effects. In addition, patients must realize that breast implants are not typically considered permanent. Most breast implants available today will need to be replaced in one to two decades. Additionally, many women opt for revision surgeries to enhance the appearance of their breasts as the aging process continues.
