Male Breast Reduction in Staten Island, NY

Dr. Decorato offers male breast reduction (gynecomastia) to patients throughout New York and New Jersey, including Staten Island, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Elizabeth, Newark, Jersey City, and Perth Amboy.

Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure used to treat abnormal breast development in men, a condition known as gynecomastia. Men who have undergone substantial weight loss may also have excess skin or fat concentrated in this area and may benefit from male breast reduction. During this procedure, excess fat, skin, and breast tissue is removed, leaving patients with a more masculine silhouette.

Is Male Breast Reduction Right for Me?

Male breast reduction may be right for you if you are a man who is self-conscious about excess tissue in the breast area. Although gynecomastia, or male breast development, is rarely discussed, in reality it afflicts up to half of all men. Many men with gynecomastia avoid taking off their shirts and stay away from physical or intimate activities that may require them to expose their condition.

Ideal candidates for male breast reduction include the following:

  • Men who are in good overall health with realistic expectations about this procedure
  • Men who are over 18 years old. During puberty, temporary abnormal breast development may occur
  • Men who have skin that is firm and elastic and will respond well to changes in the silhouette
  • Men who are less than 30 pounds overweight. If you are overweight, losing weight may correct the issue
  • Men who do not smoke marijuana or drink alcohol in excess. Both activities can cause gynecomastia

Before undergoing male breast reduction, you are advised to discuss possible underlying causes with your doctor, since it may be possible to reduce breast development without surgery. Underlying causes of gynecomastia may include impaired liver function or the use of certain medication or steroids. If you are considering breast reduction to correct gynecomastia, view male breast reduction before and after photos to examine the results possible with this procedure.

Male Breast Reduction Cost in New York or New Jersey

The cost for male breast reduction can vary depending on the volume of tissue removed, the surgical methods used, and other factors. To get an accurate price, Dr. Decorato will need to evaluate your needs during your consultation.

Procedure Details

Male breast reduction is performed with general anesthesia through an incision placed either around the areola or in the armpit. This procedure takes about two hours. First, the surgeon creates the incision, which allows access to underlying fat and glandular tissue. Excess skin may also be removed at this incision site. In addition to the removal of breast tissue using traditional surgical techniques, liposuction may also be performed if there is excess fat in the chest area. Once excess tissue has been removed through the incision, the incision is closed using sutures.

Recovery After Male Breast Reduction

After surgery, male breast reduction patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, bruising, or tenderness. There may also be some temporary numbness, particularly in the nipple area. Compression garments are typically required for up to two weeks to reduce swelling and support the tissues in their new contours. Most patients return to work in about a week, although strenuous exercise must be avoided for four to six weeks.
