Balding and thinning hair have long been a significant concern for men, and more and more women are seeking treatment.  Your hair plays an important role in how you feel about yourself, and, in our society, a full head of hair is an important part of being considered attractive.  Hair replacement is a cosmetic procedure that uses your own hair to fill in the bald and thin areas.

Is Hair Replacement Right For Me?

Hair replacement uses the hair that you have now – it does not grow new hair.  To be a good candidate for hair replacement, you should have adequate donor hair on your scalp.  You should also be in good health and have realistic expectations of the procedure.  Dr. Decorato is happy to discuss hair replacement during your consultation appointment.

The Cost of Hair Replacement in New York or New Jersey

Hair replacement costs depend on the extent of the balding and thinning that you have, as well as the extent of grafting that needs to be performed.  On average, hair replacement costs $4,000 to $15,000, and most insurance will not cover the procedure.  If you do need help with the cost of hair replacement, please visit our financing page.

Procedure Details

Hair replacement is a traditional procedure that has been used to give patients fuller, healthier hair.  The procedure typically requires only local anesthesia.  After numbing your scalp, Dr. Decorato removes grafts of skin and hair from your scalp near the base of your neck.  These grafts contain hundreds, and even thousands, of hair follicles.  After the grafted follicles are prepared for transplant, a small needle or scalpel is used to create tiny holes in the treatment area of your scalp.  The grafted follicles are then inserted into the tiny holes.  Depending on the extent of your hair replacement treatment, the procedure may take four to eight hours.

Recovery After Hair Replacement

Although hair replacement is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t require anesthesia, you will likely experience discomfort after your procedure.  Your scalp will be tender, and Dr. Decorato may prescribe pain medications to help you remain comfortable for the first two to three days.  You will need to limit your activities for up to five days, after which you may return to work.

A few weeks after your procedure, you may notice that the transplanted hair is falling out – this is normal.  After about three months, new hair starts to grow.  Over time, more and more follicles grow new hair, and you should see about 50% new growth after six months.
