A tummy tuck, officially known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the abdomen through the removal of excess abdominal skin and fat, as well as the tightening of loose abdominal muscles. A popular procedure, particularly following pregnancy or substantial weight loss, tummy tucks can achieve a flatter and more toned appearance in the stomach region.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for Me?

Most patients undergoing abdominoplasty are women who have given birth, lost a significant amount of weight, or accumulated sagging skin during the aging process. Ideal candidates are in good overall health and are at a stable weight, less than 30 pounds overweight. Patients planning future weight loss or pregnancy are advised to postpone this treatment, since these events can further change the appearance of the abdominal area. The Cost of an Abdominoplasty in New York or New Jersey

The price for a tummy tuck can vary depending on the extent of improvement desired. To get an accurate price you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Decorato who will evaluate your needs and provide a surgical plan.

Procedure Details

Tummy tucks take two to five hours and are performed under general anesthesia. Surgeons can perform tummy tucks in two ways. In complete abdominoplasty, incisions from hip bone to hip bone allow the surgeon to contour all of the abdominal tissues. Mini or partial tummy tucks require shorter incisions but restrict the surgeon’s access to tissues below the navel. This method is mainly used when most of the excess tissue is located under the position of the belly button. With either type of tummy tuck, the incisions are usually low enough on the body that they are covered by underwear or clothing.

Once these incisions are created, the surgeon can remove excess skin and fat while tightening the abdominal muscles, which often become loosened during pregnancy. If a significant amount of skin is removed, the belly button can be repositioned to a more natural location on the abdomen. Often, abdominoplasty to focus on abdominal skin and muscle is combined with liposuction to remove pockets of fat in the abdominal area. Once all of the recontouring is complete, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures.

Recovery After Your Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is considered major surgery, with recovery that can take several weeks. During the first week, the abdominal area is covered by a surgical dressing and compression garment. Most tummy tuck patients require bed rest for two to three days before gradually returning to their normal activity levels.

Most patients return to work in three to four weeks, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for up to six weeks. It can take up to three months for patients to feel completely recovered and for the full results of a tummy tuck to become apparent.
