Deciding Between Breast Implant Types
What’s The Composition?
For the most part, silicone and saline implants look the same. However, they are made of different materials. Saline implants are made of an outer silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline, which is a saltwater solution. They are filled after being placed inside the breasts. Silicone implants include an outer silicone shell and are prefilled with silicone gel. Both types of implants have been approved by the FDA to ensure effectiveness and safety.
How Do They Feel?
Most patients say that silicone implants have a softer and more natural feel than saline implants since they contain a cohesive gel. It is usually recommended that individuals who have naturally thin breast tissue use silicone implants. This is recommended because they are less susceptible to show ripples. The texture of silicone is similar to that of native breast tissue.
Do They Come In The Same Sizes?
Silicone and saline implants are available in a variety of sizes, but saline implants can be more precisely sized with differential filling. This allows using slightly different fill volumes to obtain improved symmetry of the breasts. Silicone implants are only available in fixed sizes. Normally, silicone implants require a larger incision than saline implants.
Do They Come In The Different Shapes?
Both saline filled and silicone filled implants come in different styles. Higher and lower profile implants are available that accomplish different things. The lower profile implants are wider and do not offer as much projection (push outward). Lower profile implants make the breast appear wider therefore narrowing your cleavage and providing some fullness to the outer part of your breast. This can be useful if you are trying balance hip fullness and give yourself a more “hourglass” appearance. The higher profile implants are not as wide however they provide more projection off your chest. This gives a fuller appearance to the breast and provides some lift to the breast.
Also available are anatomically shaped or tear dropped shaped implants. These implants are designed to provide a very natural appearance without as much fullness to the upper part of the breast as a round implant. The silicone filled version of the anatomical implant has a different type of gel. This is also known as the “gummy bear” implant. It is slightly firmer in feel as the silicone gel has a more solid composition.
Are There Age Requirements?
The FDA requires that patients be at least 22 years of age to qualify for silicone implants. The reason for this requirement is not clear. For saline breast implants, patients need to be 18 years old. Younger patients can receive saline implants if they have parental consent.
What About Price?
Normally, silicone implants are going to cost about $1,000 more than their saline counterparts. Our main goal is to find an option that is right for you, and we do not benefit from this difference in price.
Which Breast Implants Are Right For You?
Silicone implants may be recommended by Dr. Decorato instead of saline implants when patients have:
- Smaller breasts
- Thin skin
- A limited amount of breast tissue
Breast implants are more noticeable in women who have less breast tissue. The benefits that come from silicone implants include more natural edges, a softer appearance, a more adaptive shape, and natural motion. These benefits help to reduce the appearance of the implant. At times, saline implants may appear stiff or unnaturally round. They may not feel as natural in the patient’s body.
For these reasons, saline breast implants are usually better suited for women who have thicker skin and more breast tissue. In this case, the movement of the implants and their shape matter less. Saline implants are usually less expensive than silicone implants.
These are just general guidelines for helping you get familiar with breast implants. During your first consultation with Dr. Decorato, he will provide more information and help you to make the best decision for your circumstances.
